National Minimum Wage to increase by 3.3%

As part of the 2017 Annual Wage Review, the Fair Work Commission has announced that the National Mimimum Wage will increase to $694.90 per week or $18.29 per hour effective from 1 July 2017.

The increase is only applicable to employees that get their pay rates from the national minimum wage, a modern award or applicable registered agreements.

Reduction in Penalty Rates

Changes to Sunday and Public Holiday rates for the Hospitality, Pharmacy, Fast Food, Retail and Restaurant industries will also commence from 1 July 2017. The full impact of changes to Sunday penalty rates will be phased in over 4 years. The reduction to public holiday rates will commence in full from 1 July 2017.

Award Pay Guides

The Fair Work Ombudsman generally issue updated Award pay guides within 2-3 weeks of the Fair Work Commissions announcement. The pay guides list the minimum pay rates for full-time, part-time and casual employees in each Award. They also include all the monetary allowances and the most frequently used penalty rates for each classification.
