How to appreciate the employee review process

(Great advice for Managers!)

The employee review season has come and gone for the year and it’s a good time to reflect.
This is a time some managers may avoid or cringe at as the season nears and that is unfortunate. As a manager and a leader, this is a time for me to stop and take a moment to appreciate some things.

For example, I am stopping to appreciate the following from the team of IT administrators and engineers who work for me.

  • •   In looking back at the year, I am amazed at what my team has accomplished. If it were not for the review season, would I have ever stopped long enough to realize the magnitude of their achievements?
  • •   In the last year, they have taught me more than I’ll ever teach them. Am I a good enough student to be deserving of their wisdom? Do I listen well enough?
  • •   Throughout the year, I ask for a lot. I’m a passionate leader and my work style tends to keep my teams reach just beyond its grasp. During this review season, I can see just how hard they have worked to meet and exceed the standards I’ve set
  • •   I love the synergy my team has. We are techies and we use technology to our benefit. I appreciate that my team reaches out to me anytime they need me using a variety of technologies. I’m careful not to return the favor, even though they always seem to be working anytime work needs them. I think that is a rare quality today
  • •   The longer we work together, the more confidence I have in believing there is little my team cannot conquer
  • •   As the Director of IT, I appreciate that I can go home at night knowing my enterprise is in good hands.

When your team’s review cycle comes around, please make sure you are working for them as hard as they have worked for you. Stop to say ‘Thank You’ and make sure they know how much you appreciate them. Of course, you could do this year-round and get +2 to your effectiveness stat.

I’m sure many people would tell you that review time is about the % and that certainly is part of the equation, but praise and gratitude don’t cost a penny and yet they carry immeasurable value.
